Steam's broken 2025 update workaround for HL2MP

Steam rolled out updates yesterday which broke connections to current servers and broke the Betas, so running a beta which would normally enable you to connect to Saigns servers (before they are updated) will not work. Given that Steam's updates broke the Previous Builds, there is likely to be another update from them to fix that.

Here is my interim workaround for this....

First, in the steam library, right click Half-Life 2: Deathmatch and select Properties.

Go to the Betas tab and select Previous Build from the drop down menu. Close Properties then the game will run an update....

Once it has updated, open the Half-Life 2 Deathmatch game folder, in my case it is in the default path so I will use that path here....

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Half-Life 2 Deathmatch

Rename hl2.exe to hl2mp_win64.exe

Now you can run the game and connect to Saigns servers.

NOTE: Once the servers are updated to steam's 2025 update (I will update this post when done), then you will need to revert the Betas back to None and let the game update again, then remove the Launch Option stated above.

I was so happy that you got your HL2DM servers back up and running. I played for a while yesterday. I logged in today and I got an error saying that the server is running an older version of the game. Is that an error on my end?

The fix in post #1 in this thread is still working, please check that you have set it as shown.

The Half-Life 2: Deathmatch servers have now been updated by tF so you can now revert the Betas tab setting in the game Properties back to None.
